Alison Bass: Brown psychiatry chief Martin Keller to step down in June…

The latest from the blog of Alison Bass:

Alison Bass: Brown psychiatry chief Martin Keller to step down in June…

[...]
While Brown officials insist that the decision to step down was Keller’s, my understanding from several sources is that the university has been under pressure to take action ever since Side Effects was published last June and Sen. Charles Grassley began investigating Keller’s undisclosed conflicts of interest in July. Keller is the latest psychiatry kingpin to fall. In recent months, Stanford’s chief of psychiatry Alan Schatzberg and Emory University’s chief Charles Nemeroff were forced to step down after reports that they too failed to disclose years of lucrative financial payments from the pharmaceutical industry.

In addition, the American Journal of Psychiatry, the pre-eminent journal of the profession, just published a review of Side Effects,[...]

April Fools Day Gifts

April Fools Day Gifts
By Andy Alt / Mental Dimensions

March 19, 2009

Welcome to the Mental Dimensions gift shop. Here, you’ll find unique ways to entertain and delight yourself at the expense of other people and their sanity. These presents are sure to satisfy the most sadistic needs of April Fools Day gift-givers. Your purchase is guaranteed* or your money back**.

statue-of-libertyStatue of Liberty
The Statue of Liberty is a very popular gift; the first of which was a present from France to the United States (the rumors that it was re-gifted and was originally a gift from Norway to France have never been proved). The original is not available through Mental Dimensions, but an actual-size, genuine replica[1] can be shipped directly to your victim. Placement of their new Statue of Liberty[2] will create a logistical nightmare which will cause them to wake up screaming for many years to come. They’ll tremble with fear as they realize they’ll be forced into giving up every spare piece of acreage on their property. If they still don’t have enough room, then that makes your gift even more delightful, putting your friends or relatives into the awkward position of risking insulting you by refusing your generous gift. You’ll find it hard to hold back your giggling as you watch them stutter, sweat, and squirm as they attempt to politely tell you, “Thanks, but no thanks.”

Suicide Rates

By Alison Bass (author of Side Effects), posted on her blog October 22, 2008: New study of suicide rates reveals: the emperor has no clothes

A bewildered tone seemed to permeate the news reports this week that suicide rates among middle-aged Americans rose sharply from 1999 to 2005…

Google Attempts to Acquire itself, Shares Plummet

MOUNTAIN VIEW, CALIFORNIA (Mental Dimensions) – The market lost confidence in Google (GOOG) today after a press release announced Google failed in a takeover bid to acquire Google. A spokesman for the Internet giant apologized publicly for the error, and assured investors the cause would be addressed by the end of the next trading day.

Google is best known for its search engine and its benevolent goal to own everything on the Internet by using smiles and handshakes. Continue reading ‘Google Attempts to Acquire itself, Shares Plummet’

Several Mental Health Items, News and Editorials

Several Mental Health Items, News and Editorials
By Andy Alt / Mental Dimensions

Oct 13, 2008 – I found several links related to mental health in the news when catching up with my RSS feeds. Instead of posting a link and excerpt, or commenting on a single article, I’ve included a few items of potential interest.

Regular readers of this site know I’m not particularly fond of medications, however, I appreciated the article by Michele St. Martin.

For the record, I’m not against medication or using it to treat the various types of existing mental illnesses. I understand and recognize that many people have benefited greatly from medication. What I’m against, in a nutshell, is over-prescribing, under-diagnosing, half-ass treatment, and against deceptive or intentionally misleading marketing practices. United States Prison Population, Heatherwood Apartments Mill Creek

United States Prison Population, Heatherwood Apartments Mill Creek
By Andy Alt / Mental Dimensions

Oct 6, 2008 – Why does the United States have the highest prison population in the world? What causes crime?

You see, every once in a while I like to ask easy questions that I know have no chance for controversy.

Okay, hands up — how many people out there have been treated unfairly at work, when paying bills, when buying a home or renting? Any happy campers out there?

Oh yes, you can bet this all relates to mental health. Work hard at a job, and get underpaid or laid off. Injure yourself, hopefully you can prove in a court of law (after you’ve hired a lawyer which you can’t pay for because you’ve been fired or injured from a job) that the injury was work-related or the termination of employment wasn’t due to some type of discrimination. Moronic Studies and Capitalism without Conscience | Non Humor

Moronic Studies and Capitalism without Conscience
By Andy Alt / Mental Dimensions

Do people believe nonsense such as this that’s being passed to parents and the public? In this study, 70 out of 165 boys aged 14-18 were “diagnosed” with “conduct problems.”
